Guide: How To Manage Spotify and Pandora’s Web Player Using Keyboard Hotkeys in Chrome BrowserWhen I was looking for the keyboard shortcuts guide for our new Ultimate Guides and Ebooks section, my love for keyboard shortcuts increased tenfold. Instead of listing hundreds of shortcuts for an app, we decided to focus on the 10-12 most important shortcuts that users can actually remember and use. If you’re a fan of keyboard shortcuts or just want to get things done faster, check it out guide
I also use Spotify’s web player to stream music instead of using the app. Web View playback became so frustrating that I wrote about a Mac app called BeardedSpice that links Mac’s media keys to an online player’s playback controls.
For my Mac, this was pretty useful. But what if you’re a Windows user or don’t want an app to always run in the background? Well, let me introduce you to Musicality for Chrome. It has all features from BeardedSpice and more.
back to menu ↑ What is musicality?Musicality is a Chrome extension that resides in the toolbar and when it recognizes a compatible media service, a popup displayed with album art, song details, and playback buttons
The app supports many media services. The list includes SoundCloud, Pandora, Spotify, Rdio, Basecamp, Deezer, and much more. If the name of the extension wasn’t enough for a giveaway, it only supports music streaming services and not video streaming sites like YouTube or Vimeo.
Cool Tip I am using the Hola Unblocker Chrome extension to mask my real location in Spotify’s web player. That’s also how I created the account as Spotify is not supported in my country.
Since the extension runs in the background, it recognizes when Chrome starts playing automatically. It also shows a scrolling information bar with the name of the song. If that’s too annoying, you can change this to a progress bar or turn it off completely.
The extension supports Chrome’s toast notifications, so you’ll get pop-ups with the song changes. This can also be turned off via Options. Here you can select a default media player that will open when you click on the extension.
back to menu ↑ How to Assign shortcuts to web media playersThis is the most important part. Musicality takes advantage of Chrome’s little-known built-in keyboard shortcut support, which means it’s reliable. I’ve written about how to use Chrome’s keyboard shortcuts to quickly launch extensions here.
After Musicality is installed, click on the hamburger menu button, go to Tools (More tools in Mac) and select Extensions. Scroll to the bottom of the list and click Shortcuts.
In the Musicality Music Player section, you will see features that have definable shortcut keys. If your Mac or Windows laptop already has media keys, they are assigned by default. If not, you can define any screenshot you want.
Make sure it’s not something that conflicts with Chrome’s own shortcuts.
If you’re using Chrome’s web view in the background, you’ll be happy to know that the shortcuts are Global by default. This means you can use them anywhere.
